Here's my own little version of House Hunters. We all know that housing prices differ in different parts of the country. I frequent the Buffalo area a fair bit and I've driven through some pretty neighbourhoods in the suburbs down there. Out of curiosity, I checked the real estate prices in one of those suburbs - Amherst, N.Y..
Here's what approximately $400,000 will buy you there:

Here's what the same amount of money will buy you here:

Which one would you rather spend your money on? Too bad green cards are so hard to get...

Has the housing bust here not affected prices there? I think $400K is a little steep for that cute bungalow, but Burlington, Mississauga, Etobicoke has always been a little pricey, right? We looked at a house off Hurontario in 1985? 86 maybe? and it was $249,000 then. I'm sure it's appreciated considerably since. We built this house for $247K in 2000 but we got 4 acres of land with it. In the past 8 years, it's almost doubled (or at least it had before the bottom fell out of the real estate market.)
You wanna know what $400K would buy in coastal California? Not much. Maybe a tiny condo.
